"Always continue walking a lot and loving nature, for that’s the real way to learn to understand art better and better. Painters understand nature and love it, and teach us to see." - VvG

Andreas Schelfhout (1787-1870) is the most influential Dutch landscape artist of the 19th century. He was very successful during his life and one of the best paid artists of his time. Vincent van Gogh admired Schelfhout and mentioned him a few times in his letters. They shared their love for nature and inspired people to actually see their surroundings and become aware of its divine beauty.

Both Schelfhout and Van Gogh made sketches before painting the scene. Van Gogh painted en plein air most of the time. Schelfhout was a typical studio artist, bringing his sketches home to combine them, creating new landscapes that matched his ideal world.

Nard Kwast replicated one of Schelfhout’s winter landscapes to perfection. His impeccable painting technique and knowledge of historic masterpieces lead to a reproduction of museum quality.

This painting deserved the best possible frame which was done by Gregor's Framing. They are one of the few companies worldwide that recreate authentic seventeenth-century frames with the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg as one of their clients.

Have you ever done ice skating in The Netherlands? Many ancient windmills are still there, houses along the borders of the lakes can be centuries old. All you hear is the sound of skates on ice. For a moment it seems nothing has changed much over the years. You may feel connected with Rembrandt, Schelfhout and Van Gogh who must have experienced the same excitement of a beautiful winter’s day.

This painting captures just that. To be enjoyed in any season and anywhere in the world.
