Chairs oil paintings by Vincent van Gogh reproductions

Van Gogh painted two chairs – one his own chair, and the other chair which was used by Paul Gauguin when he came to stay with the artist for a few weeks. These two are probably some of the most analysed works of Van Gogh, and it is not because the subject of the paintings, it is because of their symbolic representations. Another interesting aspect of these paintings is the direction of the chairs. In most exhibitions when these paintings are put next to each other, Gaugin’s chair is placed on the left while Van Gogh’s chair is placed on the right. This placement symbolizes the conflicting nature of the two artists. But of course, if the chairs are placed in the opposite direction, then a different meaning can be drawn from these paintings.

Chairs series

When Van Gogh moved into his house in Arles, which is now known as The Yellow house, he wanted to create a gallery of paintings to decorate his house, and Van Gogh’s Chair was one of them. Van Gogh painted Gauguin’s when he left The Yellow house after a brief nine week stay. The empty chair was a symbol that Gauguin was truly gone, and it emphasized on Van Gogh’s loneliness.

While the two chair paintings might seem similar to some, their colour scheme is very different from each other. Van Gogh’s chair is painted with more vibrant and cheerful colours, and it depicts daylight, whereas Gauguin’s chair has more sombre and darker tones. Interestingly, Van Gogh executed both of these paintings before his ear was mutilated, but he continued to add finishing touches to these paintings even after he was hospitalized.
