Vincent van Gogh paintings destroyed by fire in the Second World War

Though all of Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpieces are now carefully preserved and kept in high security, some of his works have also been destroyed throughout time. And it isn’t that difficult to believe, after all, it’s been more than 100 years since Van Gogh died and there have been two world wars since then. A total of 6 paintings have been destroyed over the years. Not to mention, Van Gogh himself destroyed many of his initial paintings because he just wasn’t happy with them.

In 1945, his painting Vase with Five Sunflowers was destroyed during an air raid on Japan. This painting was in the private collection of Koyata Yamamoto. Since the painting’s canvas was too big, it became almost impossible to move it when the fire broke.

The painting Vase with Five Sunflowers was done by Van Gogh for the studio he was planning to create in his home so that he could work together with his friend, Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh’s idea was to decorate the whole wall with sunflowers. This painting was done on a 98 x 69 cm canvas.

It was executed by Van Gogh when he anticipated the arrival of Gauguin to Arles. This painting was a part of the Sunflower series by the artist. One part of the series was done in Paris, while the other was done in Arles. In all the paintings from Arles, the sunflowers are kept in a vase.

The painting is done with quick brushstrokes, and Van Gogh has used vibrant shades of yellow in it. The deep blue in the background really helps bring the flowers out.
