Vincent Van Gogh Paintings at Neue Pinakothek

Neue Pinakothek in Munich, Germany, is one of the most important museums to focus on 18th and 19th century European Art in the world. It was founded by the former kind of Bavaria, King Ludwig I, in 1853. Initially there was a strong focus on paintings of German origin, such as German Romanticism and the Munich School, but as the years past and the museum’s role expanded, more diverse artworks were acquired.

Within their collection are two Van Gogh works, the very famous and first version of, Vase With Twelve Sunflowers, painted in 1888. And Orchard in Blossom with View of Arles (or View of Arles, Flowering Orchards) painted in 1889.

Vase With Twelve Sunflowers was painted as decoration for the Yellow House, the apartment Van Gogh rented and hoped to turn into an artist studio. A place he could invite fellow artists and they could work side by side as they developed their craft. There are two versions of this enigmatic painting, still to this day considered one of the most remarkable still life paintings ever completed. Van Gogh made a second version, or a ‘repetition’ as he called it, as he was afraid he might lose the original, either through postal damage, or Paul Gauguin, the artist whom stayed with him and expressed so much admiration for it, may take it for himself. There are slight differences between the two versions, the other is part of the permanent collection at The Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Orchard in Blossom with View of Arles is a dreamy depiction of the view of Arles, a town Van Gogh had spent a lot of time over the previous years. The painting is almost medieval in its concentration on the fertile grounds and fruitfulness of the trees and blossoming of flowers. Van Gogh soon left Arles after this work, perhaps it was his way of saying goodbye to the nature he had spent so much time admiring.
