"I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day.” - Vincent van Gogh

Only 3 years before Van Gogh painted the Potato Eaters and many other dark paintings when he lived in Nuenen. In Paris the impressionists inspired him to paint brighter.

In search for warm light and bright colors Vincent decided to move further to the South of France where he painted his famous Sunflower series in bright yellow. But his dark night scenes were radiating light as well! Starry Night, Cafe Terrace, Road with Cypress and Star, and Starry Night over the Rhone are 4 examples of his nocturnal paintings.

In Starry Night over the Rhone, the stars gleam brilliantly against the deep blue and velvety night sky. Additionally, the lights from houses along the banks of the Rhone river shimmer in the water, further enhancing the painting's enigmatic atmosphere.

This 70-year old French baroque frame is made of wood and stucco, beautifully covered in gold leaf. Its patina enhances the greens and blues in the painting, where the golden tones make the stars and the reflections on the water shine even brighter.

The frame is in excellent condition. with minimal signs of wear.
