They looked at things like van Gogh's painting technique and his painting materials, and found that it was painted in the same way that Van Gogh did during that time.

They also found a letter from Van Gogh where he talked about painting a landscape that sounded like the one in the painting, which helped prove that it was a real Van Gogh painting.
