"I’m working on a large canvas of a ravine. It’s enjoyable to work in really wild sites where you have to bury your easel in the stones so that the wind doesn’t send everything flying to the ground."

The Ravine of the Peyroulets replica in oil on canvas

Van Gogh Studio is located in Amsterdam, near the Van Gogh museum where we can study the original works. Our paintings are all painted in oil on canvas by mainly Dutch artists who have studied Van Gogh's technique, including brushstrokes, color mixing, atmosphere and the rhythm of painting.

Untamed beauty

In the late autumn season, Vincent Van Gogh painted the stunning artwork known as "The Ravine." He shared his thoughts on the painting with his friend Émile Bernard, expressing how he found such subjects to be both melancholic and inspiring. Van Gogh loved to work in rugged and untamed places, where the beauty of nature was at its most raw and unfiltered.

Van Gogh's letter to Bernard also revealed the challenges of working in such an environment, as he described having to dig his easel into the rocky terrain to keep it from toppling over in the strong winds. Despite the difficulties, however, Van Gogh found great pleasure in the process of creating his art amidst the rugged and untamed beauty of the natural world.

Hidden artwork

The Ravine in The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston has a hidden artwork of "Wild Vegetation" beneath the surface. This remained unknown until 2007, when x-rays revealed its existence, more than a century after Van Gogh created the piece.

It is improbable that Van Gogh was dissatisfied with the original painting and deliberately painted over it. He had previously made sketches of it and written about it to his brother Theo. It is likely that Van Gogh simply ran out of canvas and reused the same one, inadvertently covering up another masterpiece in the process.
