In 1890 Van Gogh moved from the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence to Auvers-sûr-Oise. Just before he wrote his brother that he was glad to leave and that the change of environment would do him good. It had been a tough time, although work had been healing him. “Work is going well, I’ve done 2 canvases of the fresh grass in the park, one of which is extremely simple.”

And the simplicity of nature is what Van Gogh loved so much. Just tree trunks and grass and all their details was enough to make him "insensible to everything else and in a good mood”.

This beautiful Italian handmade wooden frame from the early 1900s is in very good condition. It makes the grass sparkle in the bright light of the Provence with its organic rococo style.

If you ever have the chance to visit the asylum in Saint-Rémy do plan some extra time to walk around the woods at the bottom of the low mountain range (The Alpilles). A painting is so much more than oil paint applied in brushstrokes to a piece of canvas. It will tell you a special story about a special painter that lived 132 years ago.
