Portrait oil paintings by Vincent van Gogh reproductions

While Vincent Van Gogh only drew many self-portraits, the number of portraits done by him are also numerous. He made portraits from 1881 till 1890, the year he died. This was the same time when cameras and photographs were coming in, so instead of just drawing a replica of someone, like a photograph, Van Gogh wanted to give his portraits a deeper meaning. In a letter to his brother Theo, Van Gogh revealed that he wanted to draw paintings that not everybody would be able to understand. Some of the most famous portraits by Van Gogh include the portrait of Doctor Gachet, Pere Tanguy and Joseph Roulin.

Portrait Series

Having lived in the impressionist era, all of Van Gogh’s paintings seemed influenced by it as well. Instead of painting the replica of a person, Van Gogh put his own perspective and feelings about the subjects in his paintings. All of his portraits focused on brushstrokes and colour, which used to depict their qualities and Van Gogh’s relationship with them.

As Van Gogh moved to different places, he got different muses to paint. He painted portraits in the Netherlands, Belgium and France. During his time, Van Gogh painted many peasants because he wanted to depict their life struggle and spirit on the canvas. Frustrated by traditionalists who only wanted to stick to certain techniques, Van Gogh hoped to capture the peasant life in the most unique way possible.

In his later years, he painted a portrait of his mother as well. After receiving a black and white photograph of his mother from his sister, Van Gogh was taken aback by the lack of colour, so he decided to give his own take on it. His portrait revealed the dignified and proud nature of his mother.
