At the end of May 1888 Vincent van Gogh traveled by stagecoach from Arles 40km South to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. Back then this little town on the Mediterranean coast only had about 100 houses and a church. Saintes-Maries is still small, surrounded by the serene Camargues where you can see flamingos and wild horses.

The gilded wood of this early 19th century Italian frame brings out the best of the blue-greenish sky and the purple lavender in the foreground. The neo-classical style provides dignity to Saintes-Maries that is a place of pilgrimage for gypsies. The 200-year-old frame is in very good condition. Of course there is only one Vincent, but take a look at the original Van Gogh painting in the Kröller-Müller Museum in The Netherlands and you’ll see that this piece is definitely museum worthy.

If you ever want to visit Saintes-Maries, you may want to go in May. Gypsies from all over Europe come to Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer then and worship Black Sara, their Patron saint. The festival goes back to the Middle Ages and their ceremonies are still the same; the crowd sing and praise the Saint Marys and a procession takes Sara to the sea. This painting may be your ultimate souvenir.
