Vincent van Gogh called painting "the lightning conductor for my illness" because he felt that he could keep himself from going insane by continuing to paint.

After Van Gogh’s mental issues in Arles where he cut off his left ear he moved to the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. At first Van Gogh wasn’t allowed to leave the premises. That didn’t stop him from painting though. His first painting was the Irises that he found in the garden of the asylum.

You may wonder why he painted the flowers blue instead of purple. He actually did paint them purple (blue + red), but his red paint was not stable and disappeared from the purple over time.

This heavy 100-year-old Dutch frame has some signs of ageing, like cracks and missing parts. But what a combination with the greens and blues! It also keeps the painting natural. Like the opposite of a poster. And it brings you back to one of the most remarkable episodes in art history. It shows Van Gogh’s drive follow his dreams and to paint no matter the circumstances.
