Van Gogh's creation of the skull with the cigarette can be seen as a reaction against the traditional and conservative teaching methods of the academy in Antwerp.

This very rare wooden 19th century Napoleon ||| frame with intact glass accompanies Van Gogh’s smoking skull making it a beautiful and unique decorative object.

At that time (1886) Van Gogh couldn't know the dangers of smoking. His joke was simply that skulls don’t smoke. It was his way to show the teachers at the academy in Antwerp that he preferred emotion to technique.

In Antwerp Van Gogh had clearly studied anatomy carefully as well though. A step in his development as a painter. Next step would be influenced by impressionists in Paris.

The frame is in very good condition with some signs of aging.
