Van Gogh was in Antwerp at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, which he found rather boring and taught him nothing. The skull was his response to conservative academic practices.

Small paintings need big frames. With that in mind we found an exceptional match for the skull with burning cigarette. The original painting in the Van Gogh Museum is not much larger. But look how this 100-year-old frame gives ‘body’ to the skeleton.

The bombastic golden ornaments of the frame are in line with the macabre appearance of the skeleton. And the cracks in the skull come back in the marble like looks on the inside of the frame. What a match.

The skull with a burning cigarette was painted by Van Gogh in Antwerp in early 1886 where he rebelliously decided to paint emotional expressions instead of following the usual academic technical approach. The intended pun was not about the danger of smoking which was hardly recognized back then. The joke was simply the fact that skulls don’t smoke.
