Women Picking Olives replica in oil on canvas

Van Gogh Studio is a vibrant hub of artistic passion and creativity, located in the heart of Amsterdam just a stone's throw away from the iconic Van Gogh museum. Our team of talented Dutch artists are devoted to capturing the essence of Van Gogh's distinctive style and technique, bringing to life the vivid colors, bold brushstrokes, and emotional intensity that made him one of the greatest artists of all time.

On or about 25 November 1889,

Vincent van Gogh wrote to Emile Bernard from Arles:

"So at present am working in the olive trees, seeking the different effects of a grey sky against yellow earth, with dark green note of the foliage; another time the earth and foliage all purplish against yellow sky, then red ochre earth and pink and green sky. See, that interests me more than the so-called abstractions.”

Three versions

Van Gogh was captivated by the subject of women picking olives and painted three different versions of it.

Van Gogh cared more about expressing the feelings and spirit of the scene, rather than just showing it as it is. He wanted to show how connected people and nature are, and that's why the trees and landscape blend with the women in the painting. It's obvious that this subject was important to Van Gogh, and he spent a lot of time and effort creating three versions of the painting, each with its own special touch.
