Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen replica in oil on canvas

Van Gogh Studio is located in Amsterdam, near the Van Gogh museum where we can study the original works. Our paintings are all painted in oil on canvas by mainly Dutch artists who have studied Van Gogh's technique, including brushstrokes, color mixing, atmosphere and the rhythm of painting.

Painted by Van Gogh

Depicting a church in Nuenen, this painting showcases a beautiful yellow building in between with people all around. In true Van Gogh fashion, no painting is ever complete without an element of nature.

And that is why you can see big trees on both ends of the church. The clear blue sky and yellow and scarce leaves on the trees are an indicator of fall. Since Vincent’s father was a pastor, Vincent too was very religious and often went to the church.

He believed in God, and there are many religious references spread across his paintings.

A personal inspiration

This painting was made by Van Gogh for his mother in an effort to make her feel better. Her thigh bone had broken, and she was on bed rest. To uplift her spirits, Vincent painted a small church with trees and hedges.

An X-ray analysis of the painting revealed that initially the trees were bare and there were peasants outside the church. But later, Vincent added mourning churchgoers and leaves to the trees. It is possible that Vincent added these changes after his father’s death.

Current Value of Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuenen

According to Adriaan Dönszelmann, the managing director of the Van Gogh Museum, the estimated value of both works at the time of the crime was a whopping 4 million euros, or about 4.5 million dollars.

The current market price of the painting is a lot higher than the estimated value in 2002. We can be sure the Van Gogh Museum will never sell this painting though..
