Portrait Of Doctor Gachet replica in oil on canvas

Van Gogh Studio is located in Amsterdam, near the Van Gogh museum where we can study the original works. Our paintings are all painted in oil on canvas by mainly Dutch artists who have studied Van Gogh's technique, including brushstrokes, color mixing, atmosphere and the rhythm of painting.

A Last Few Months

One of his most famous works, there are two versions of this painting. It shows Doctor Gachet sitting with his hands on a table with his head leaning on his right arm. Both the paintings are essentially the same, but for style and colour. Both were painted in June 1890—just a month before the master painter’s death.

After securing his release from the asylum at Saint-Remy, Vincent was sent to Doctor Gachet’s home in Auvers by his brother Theo, who looked after him financially. Gachet, although a doctor by profession, had an avid interest in art, and was an amateur artist himself.

Van Gogh is known to have said that he had found a true friend and brother in Doctor Gachet, and that they resembled each other mentally and physically.

A Melancholy Gaze

Doctor Gachet has a melancholy gaze in this portrait,  often described by experts as ‘the sad expression of our time’. His sad and rather droopy eyes appear to be searching for something far away, something he’s unsure of.

The table is red in colour, and has two yellow books—Germinie Lacerteux and Manette Salomon, written by two brothers—the presence of the books representing the close relationship he shared with Doctor Gachet. There’s also the plant foxglove on the table, the plant used to derive the medicine digitalis—reflecting the muse’s profession, or perhaps indicating that the doctor used this drug to treat him.
In the same letter to his sister, he wrote: “I've done the portrait of M. Gachet with a melancholy expression, which might well seem like a grimace to those who see it... Sad but gentle, yet clear and intelligent, that is how many portraits ought to be done... There are modern heads that may be looked at for a long time, and that may perhaps be looked back on with longing a hundred years later”

Current Value of Portrait of Doctor Gachet

This happens to be one of his most expensive work. It was sold at a whopping price of $82.5 million in the year 1990, to Japan’s second-largest paper manufacturer, Ryoei Saito.

Erik.

Dr. Gachet arrived today and I could not be more pleased with the result. The painting is everything I was hoping for. Thank you for the attention to detail and the care with this piece, the brush strokes are really beautiful. I am so glad that I purchased this painting from the Van Gogh Studio and that it came from Amsterdam. I would not do it any other way. Thank you again!

I am looking forward to being at the house of Dr. Gachet this summer, and will take your advice and seek out the roots that were his part of his final thoughts. I look forward to a future purchase with you guys on my next Van Gogh piece.

All the best
Jonathan
