Seascape at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer replica in oil on canvas
It’s a well known fact that scenes of
nature and everyday life were a favourite of Van Gogh when it came to painting. After his stay in
Paris, there was a stark contrast in his paintings when compared to his previous, more sombre, works of art.
Van Gogh Studio is located in Amsterdam, near the Van Gogh museum where we can study the original works. Our paintings are all painted in oil on canvas by mainly Dutch artists who have studied Van Gogh's technique, including brushstrokes, color mixing, atmosphere and the rhythm of painting.
An Amalgamation Of Everything.
Vincent Van Gogh was not one to shy away from using colours that may not be a part of the actual scene at all. To him, experimenting with colours was his way of playing with contrast and intensity.
In ‘The Sea at Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer’ Van Gogh was trying his best to capture as much colour and shade as he could. In a letter to Theo Van Gogh, he says, ‘The Mediterranean has the colour of mackerel, changeable, I mean.
You don’t always know if it’s
green or
violet, you can’t even say it’s
blue, because the next moment, the changing light has taken on a pinch of
pink or
grey.’
Coming Through In Waves
Van Gogh took three canvases to Saintes-Maries. Over there he painted one with a view of the village, and two of the sea, with numerous
fishing boats in the frame. One of these paintings was was painted rather hastily.
However, in the end, this one ended up becoming the favourite souvenir of Van Gogh’s first trip to the Mediterranean. Soon after, he created
three more versions of this study for Emile Bernard, Theo Van Gogh, and John Russell.
