Weaver Seen from the Front replica in oil on canvas

Van Gogh Studio is located in Amsterdam, near the Van Gogh museum where we can study the original works. Our paintings are all painted in oil on canvas by mainly Dutch artists who have studied Van Gogh's technique, including brushstrokes, color mixing, atmosphere and the rhythm of painting.

Weaving as a Trade

Back in the 1880s weaving, especially in the rural areas, was not considered a prosperous trade. The income that a weaver earned depended upon the market conditions as much as they depended on the kind of crop yields for the raw materials.

In his letter to his brother Theo, this is what Van Gogh had to say – “The life of weavers is tough. After putting hours of hard work every day a 60 Yard piece of cloth is what a weaver ends up making at the end of a week. While the weaver works on loom, his wife winds up the spools of yarn. So essentially, it is a job of two, for whom this is the only way to make a living.”

Van Gogh’s view of Weavers

Van Gogh was in Nuenen when he made the painting, “Weaver Seen from the Front.” He had focused on making drawings and paintings of only the weavers for about six months’ time. He considered weavers as men who lived noble lives.

He observed their meditative appearance as they worked on the loom. In his letter to his brother that he wrote in 1883, he said that weavers hardly get time to philosophize about weaving, as they have to direct and interweave multiple threads at one time.

As per him, weavers get so absorbed into what they do that they actually feel how things need to move. The main focus of Van Gogh in this painting is on the weaver and his loom. It just feels as if someone is looking at this scene.

Very happy with 'my weaver'. I saw the original in the Kroller_Muller museum in The Netherlands. My mother and my grandmother wove the curtains for our house 50 years ago. Brings back sweet memories. Thank you Van Gogh Studio. - Willem
