Vincent’s Bedroom oil paintings by Vincent van Gogh reproductions

Vincent Van Gogh made three versions of his bedroom in Arles. All these three versions have been separately described in Van Gogh’s letters, and they are easily distinguishable based on the pictures on the right wall above the bed. Also known as The Yellow House, the door present on the right opened directly on to the staircase and upper floor. While the door to the left was the entry to the guest room that Van Gogh had prepared for Gauguin. Though the room was actually trapezoid with an obtuse angle and not a perfect rectangle, Van Gogh did not stress much on that fact. He just depicted it as a corner in the painting.

Vincent's Bedroom series

In a letter to his brother Theo and later to Gauguin, Van Gogh included a rough sketch of the bedroom painting’s first version to explain what he was trying to achieve with them. Van Gogh did want to reproduce his bedroom, but he wanted to add a lot of colour just to add grandeur to the otherwise simple things. This painting was actually done after Van Gogh had been bedridden for days. 

The paintings above the bed in this version are miniature portraits of his friends Paul-Eugène Milliet and Eugène Boch. The second version was created in April 1889 when the initial one was damaged in flood. It was Theo who recommended to reline the painting and then create a repetition. In the summer of 1889, Van Gogh decided to redo some of his best work, and the bedroom painting was one of them. But instead of creating a repetition, Van Gogh did a smaller sized painting of the Bedroom for his mother and sister Wil. An interesting fact about the third version is that one of the two paintings over the bed has not been linked to any of the existing Van Gogh paintings.
