Vincent Van Gogh Paintings at the Getty Center, Los Angeles

The J. Paul Getty Museum is part of the J. Paul Getty Trust and is the world’s largest cultural organization dedicated to the visual arts. It was opened in 1997 as a museum and educational centre. Their collection houses pre-20th-century European paintings, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, sculpture, and decorative arts; and 19th- and 20th-century American and European photographs.

One of their most famous acquisitions was Irises, by Van Gogh. Originally it had been purchased by an Australian businessman, Alan Bond, in 1987, for the then record price of $53.9 million. In the end he was unable to complete the payment and it was sold to the J. Paul Getty Museum in 1990. It is now ranked 10th on the most expensive painting list.

Vincent van Gogh replica oil paintings for sale

If you enjoy the expertise and artistry in Van Gogh’s paintings, there really is no better way to appreciate them than to have your very own. Irises is available to order on our website, along with many other Van Gogh works.

Irises was painted as Van Gogh had entered asylum, after a period of mental instability, in Saint-Remy-de-Provence in 1889, the year before his death. He worked from nature for the piece, finding irises in the hospital garden to paint. There are no known sketches or studies done for the piece, so it is highly likely Van Gogh considered the final version a study. His brother Theo, upon seeing it, knew that it was another finished and beautiful work, he instantly submitted it to an exhibition in Paris, and remarked to Vincent, ‘[It] strikes the eye from afar. The Irises are a beautiful study full of air and life."
