The lush greens and yellows of the fields reach all the way to the horizon. Above a moody sky in deep contemplation. Thick strokes of paint help give this ode to nature a strong and vibrant quality.

Wheat Field under Thunderclouds Replica on Canvas

Van Gogh Studio is based in Amsterdam, nearby the Van Gogh Museum where we continue to study the original works. Our paintings are all hand-painted by Dutch and world artists starting out on their own individual careers.

They have studied the technique of Van Gogh, including brush strokes, colour mixing, ambience and rhythm of application.

Auvers-sur-Oise

After leaving Saint-Remy and heading to Paris to spend a few days with his brother Theo, and his family there, Van Gogh was already finding the pace of life there difficult. He no longer found the commotion of Paris inspiring and became agitated and unable to paint.
His brother, along with a fellow Parisian artist, devised a plan for Van Gogh to go and stay in Auvers-sur-Oise with Dr Gachet, a homeopathic physician and art patron who could give Van Gogh a roof and keep an eye on his health.

Van Gogh arrived there in early spring and was instantly taken with the surrounding environment, especially the fields and nature.

Van Gogh’s Final Series of Paintings

Not long after arriving at Dr. Gachet’s residence, in July 1890 Van Gogh began working on a series of landscape paintings depicting various stages of the wheat harvest that happens in Auvers, France, from middle to late July.

These thirteen paintings compromised his final works. The first one he put on canvas was Wheat Field Under Thunderclouds (also known as Wheat Field Under Cloudy Sky).

The proportions of these paintings are rectangular (landscape) 50cm x 100cm giving it a wide and vast quality. And this being the last series of paintings Van Gogh did before he took his own life it’s no surprise the vastness also gave way to a loneliness, though the work is still imbued with his inspired awe for nature.
