Vincent van Gogh started collecting Japanese woodblock prints in Antwerp. Later in Paris he even owned hundreds of these Ukiyo-e prints.
Since then many of his paintings show typical Japanse features like intense colors, flattened compositions, diagonal lines and cropped perspectives.
In 1887 Vincent copied three Ukiyo-e prints in his own style: Bridge in the Rain and Flowering Plum Tree by Ando/Utagawa Hiroshige. And Oiran, The Courtesan by Keisai Eisen.
Our hand-painted replica of Van Gogh’s painting Oiran, the Courtesan doesn’t have a golden frame like the original in the Van Gogh Museum, but a rare antique Italian guilloché style frame in black. It makes the bright colors stand out even more and it has this very Japanese appearance that inspired Van Gogh so much.
