Potato Eaters oil paintings by Vincent van Gogh reproductions

Through the series of Potato Eaters paintings, Vincent Van Gogh wanted to depict the hardworking labour of that time and how at the end of the day, they only ate potatoes for dinner. In an effort to discover different techniques, Van Gogh made three versions of this painting – the main Potato Eater oil painting which is now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, a preliminary oil sketch that is at the Kröller-Müller Museum in the Netherlands, and a study of The Potato Eaters in the Van Gogh Museum.

Potato Eaters Series

According to Van Gogh, this was one of the finest works he had done, but surprisingly, not many people agreed with him back then. To start with, his brother Theo wasn’t impressed with the work. After all, this painting was starkly different from the vibrant paintings Van Gogh usually did. Since the Potato Eaters was Van Gogh’s way of bringing attention to the manual labour, and that is why he deliberately chose peasant models that looked ugly and coarse. The painting also clearly depicted how the labour had to live in low light settings.

Van Gogh’s friend Anthon van Rappard also criticized the painting. Even though it was a clear blow to Van Gogh’s motivation since he was still an emerging artist, he made it clear that he was always on the lookout of doing things that he couldn’t do yet. Van Gogh made the lithograph of the painting before starting out the main version. According to the letter sent to his brother Theo, Vincent made the lithograph in less than a day. His Potato Eaters original painting is so famous that thieves have tried to rob it twice. Fortunately, the painting survived all that and is on public display at the Van Gogh Museum.
