One of the many self portraits made by Van Gogh, this was made in the year 1889. This portrait happens to be one of the Dutch master’s most intense self-portraits.

Van Gogh's Self-Portrait

Replica on Canvas

This painting is an authentic reproduction of Van Gogh’s self-portrait, where he appears unshaven. The painting clearly depicts the haggard appearance of his skin, a trait that can be seen in most of Van Gogh’s self-portraits.

Created by one of the most admired painters of Holland, this painting is a perfect example of Van Gogh’s honest magic.

Into His World

This portrait brings together the best of Van Gogh’s artistic skills—a great choice of colours, and a style of painting that resonates energy. Vincent Van Gogh created more than 40 self-portraits during the period of 1886 to 1889.

In a letter to his sister, he says that he had worked more with colours, painting flowers and landscapes as he couldn’t afford to pay for models. And so he started making self portraits. However, it was not only a way to make his ends meet; he believed that making self portraits would actually help him develop his painting skills.

This painting is thought to be a portrait of his internal crisis. The piercing eyes on the portrait have the ability to hold you transfixed in a captivating stare. The focus of the eye is not on the outside world, but something to do with his inner dilemma—the eyes clearly is the main focus of the portrait.

Even to a completely novice beholder, the way Van Gogh’s masterful brushstrokes have managed to create a calm yet grim expression. The ripples across his coat—and the hair that bursts into a calm turbulence in the background (a combination of cool green and blue hues)—gives this portrait a very intense look.

The striking red beard and hair amidst the calm colours perfectly portray the psychological tone of the painting.
