Vincent van Gogh paintings in Drenthe

In September 1883, Vincent van Gogh relocated from The Hague to Drenthe. Theo, who disapproved of Vincent’s involvement with the prostitute Sien Hoornik, convinced him to end the relationship. Drenthe promised to be a source of inspiration for Vincent, much like it had been for Anthon van Rappard. Additionally, it provided an opportunity for Vincent to connect with fellow artist Max Liebermann. This move from The Hague to Drenthe was comparable to the celebrated painters Rousseau, Millet, and Dupré leaving Paris for Barbizon to capture the picturesque rural scenery.

Lonely Vincent

Things didn’t go as planned. Vincent missed Sien and her children, and Liebermann had already left. Most artists visited picturesque villages like Rolde, Vries, Exloo, Westerbork, and Zweeloo during the summer, while Hoogeveen and Nieuw-Amsterdam in autumn lacked that charm. Feeling lonely, Van Gogh moved to Nuenen to live with his parents just three months after arriving. However, he had fallen in love with the Drenthe landscape and its people. Could this experience be the foundation of his painting career?
