Van Gogh was very happy with his painting of the harvest near Arles. He wrote to his brother Theo in 1888: "The last canvas absolutely kills all the rest."

In Nuenen Van Gogh painted peasants who he respected so much. He wanted to show their hard and honest work. A few years later in the South of France he painting peasants again but you can see his style changed radically.

The impressionists in Paris had inspired him to paint more colorful and Van Gogh decided to move to the South of France to find warm light and bright colors. No wonder he liked his painting of The Harvest so much. You can feel the heat of the Provence.

Although this 50 year old Dutch frame has an impressive royal appearance it still manages to keep your focus on the painting. Probably the way Van Gogh would have liked it. ‘His’ peasants deserve this.
