Early 19th-century
The "Portrait of Henry Brougham" is an early 19th-century oil on canvas by the English painter Sir Thomas Lawrence, Britain’s leading portraitist and President of the Royal Academy at the time. Lawrence was renowned for painting many prominent figures of the Regency era, and in this portrait he depicts the politician and lawyer Henry Brougham, who would later become Baron Brougham and serve as Lord Chancellor.
History and description
A prominent member of the Whig opposition, Brougham first gained fame in 1820 for his defence of Caroline of Brunswick during King George IV’s attempt to divorce her in the House of Lords. His political career advanced steadily, culminating in his elevation to the peerage as Baron Brougham in 1830 and his appointment as Lord Chancellor in the first long-lasting Whig government. The portrait captures him at a pivotal moment in his rise to national prominence.
Reception and legacy
Lawrence’s refined style, admired for its elegance, was sometimes criticised for flattering his sitters. Some observers felt his depiction of Brougham softened the politician’s sharp features and strong personality. Interestingly, Brougham himself was not satisfied with the portrait, which may explain his reluctance to pose for Benjamin Robert Haydon’s painting "The Reform Banquet" in the early 1830s. Today, however, the work is recognised as an important example of Regency portraiture. Acquired in 1943, the "Portrait of Henry Brougham" is now part of the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.
