Vincent van Gogh paintings in Private Collections

The Portrait of Doctor Gachet is one of the most acclaimed paintings done by Van Gogh. Instead of directly copying the doctor’s face, Vincent wanted to create a modern portrait. The idea behind this was to depict Vincent’s feelings about the doctor through the brushstrokes and colours.
There were two versions of this painting done by the artist. The first version was sold by Vincent’s sister in law in 1897 for a mere 300 francs. This is the same version which was later sold at Christie’s. The other version was owned by Gachet himself and was later on given to the Republic of France by his heirs.
