Beauty in Simplicity

Two Cut Sunflowers is one of Van Gogh’s most direct and concentrated flower paintings. Rather than showing a full bouquet in a vase, he focused on just two cut blossoms, placed close to the picture plane and painted with extraordinary attention. The result is intimate, bold and surprisingly powerful.

What makes this painting so compelling is its simplicity. Van Gogh removes everything that is unnecessary and lets the sunflowers speak for themselves. Antique Italian frame

For this painted replica we chose a richly ornamented Italian gilt frame from the mid-twentieth century, inspired by the Baroque tradition. Made of hardwood with a solid structure of wood and gesso, it has abundant relief decoration with acanthus leaves and scrolling volutes in the Louis XIV manner. 

The frame is in very good condition and retains a beautiful original glossy patina. Its deeper outer border gives the presentation richness and weight, while the calmer inner opening keeps the painting itself clear and luminous. This balance works especially well for Two Cut Sunflowers, which already has such concentrated colour and visual intensity.
 

Rather than overpowering the subject, the frame adds warmth, dignity and a touch of old-world splendour. The gold responds beautifully to Van Gogh’s sunflower palette, making the yellows feel even more radiant. Together, painting and frame form an elegant and characterful ensemble: modest in scale, yet full of presence.
