Vincent van Gogh painted a peasant woman coming home after a hard day’s work. Cottages like this (it actually shows two homes with two entrances and a shared chimney) were described by Vincent as ‘people’s nests’ to show its sheltering purpose.

This beautiful little painting needed a frame to give it body without distracting from the painting. And it worked! The thick dark golden ornaments of this early very special 20th century frame create depth that makes your eyes go into this scene of Nuenen nearly 140 years ago.

Keeping the style dark as Van Gogh painted at that time the painting reveals an amazing palette of colors at the same time. Frame and painting work together reinforcing each other and give peasants the respect that Van Gogh wanted to demonstrate.
