"seeking oppositions of blue with orange, red and green, yellow and violet, seeking the broken and neutral tones to harmonise brutal extremes. Trying to render intense color and not a grey harmony."

Van Gogh’s Four Sunflowers gone to Seed may be his best painting of his Parisian period. It is hard to believe that only a year before he painted the De Groot family in their cottage in Nuenen (The Potato Eaters) in such dark colors. The influence of impressionists in Paris was huge on Van Gogh. He started painting with brighter colors and experimented with their contrasting tones.

The sunflowers got his attention and two years later in Arles he would start his famous series of sunflowers in a vase. Van Gogh’s Four Cut Sunflowers symbolize his transformation as an artist.

If you are ever visiting The Netherlands don’t forget to travel to Otterlo, just one hour from Amsterdam, to the Krüller-Müller Museum. This amazing museum is situated in a national park and hosts the world’s second largest collection of Van Gogh works, including Cafe Terrace and Four Cut Sunflowers.

And then the frame! This 19th century Italian wooden museum worthy frame is decorated with golden leaves and flowers; a perfect combination with the painting. The gold makes the blues in the background so powerful. There are several restorations and retouches (see photos and video), minor parts are missing, but overall this 7,5 kg frame is in fairly good state of conservation.

This painting in this frame would look amazing in any castle or palace in the world. So why not on your wall?
