Just a Study

Irises was one of the first paintings he produced on arriving at the asylum in Saint-Remy, France. He worked from nature in the asylum’s garden, and it is believed the final Irises was just a study, as no other drawings were ever discovered for the piece.

The First Owner of the Irises

The first owner of Irises was Julien ‘Pere’ Tanguy, a paint grinder who also sold art supplies and was an art dealer who first met Van Gogh during his own portrait sessions.

Three paintings were produced of Mr. Tanguy: Portrait of Pere Tanguy, Winter, and two others titled, Portrait of Pere Tanguy. He soon sold it to art critic Octave Mirbeau, one of Van Gogh’s earliest supporters, for 300 francs.

In 1987, Irises sold at an auction at Sotheby’s in New York for $53.9 million, the most expensive price ever for an artwork at that time. The painting is also known as “Country Road in Provence by Night”. Van Gogh painted Road with Cypress and Star in Provence, his last before he left the asylum he was in.

He was very fascinated by Cypress trees and wanted to use them in his art. He thought them beautiful with regard to lines and proportions, like an Egyptian obelisk. He also thought the green had a distinguished quality. The painting is divided in half by a Cypress tree that is so tall, it extends out of the painting.

Van Gogh, described the painting as follows: “A night sky with a moon without radiance, the slender crescent barely emerging from the opaque shadow cast by the earth. One star with an exaggerated brilliance, if you like, a soft brilliance of pink and green in the ultramarine sky, across which some clouds are hurrying.

Below, a road bordered with tall yellow canes, behind these the blue Basses Alpes, an old inn with yellow lighted windows, and a very tall cypress, very straight, very sombre. On the road, a yellow cart with a white horse in harness, and two late wayfarers. Very romantic, if you like, but also Provence, I think.”

About the Painting

There is also a third smaller version that is held in a private collection.

The Sower, painted by Van Gogh at Arles, in 1888, is widely considered to be a representation of The Last Judgement in the gospel of Matthew. It speaks about how God sows the seeds of the spirit in the soil of humanity and returns on the last day to reap the harvest.

The Arles Sunflowers

Van Gogh's paintings of sunflowers have reconstructed mankind's view of art and life. The painting dates back to 1888, when Van Gogh left Paris to paint in the gleaming sunshine of the South of France, requesting Paul Gauguin to join him.

Waiting for his friend to arrive, Van Gogh painted a series of pictures of sunflowers to brighten his friend's bedroom. They were meant as a sign of friendship and welcome, but also of Vincent's devotion to Gauguin as his artistic leader.

From the moment of his arrival in Provence on February 20, Van Gogh’s art moved forth at a furious pace. The most remarkable paintings were those of the sunflowers. Flowers had eclipsed his output during the summer of 1886.

But it was in Arles that the glorious sunflower period began. This was when he moved into a small yellow house on the edge of the square. The outside walls turned the colour of fresh butter and its shutters a ‘hideous’ green, by his demand.

The five months he waited to move in, inspired his brilliant plan. He is said to have told Emile Bernard, "I'm thinking of decorating my studio with half a dozen paintings of sunflowers."

“The Sunflower Is Mine”

Van Gogh recognized that he had created something significant, and savored the fact that his sunflowers were so distinctive that they worked almost like an artist’s signature.

There is a record of him telling his brother during a period where all other artists were known for painting other flowers, "The sunflower is mine".

The Sunflowers stood for sun and spirit against the dinginess of the north. It was this last one painting in the sequence which the artist himself was most pleased with, and proceeded to sign.
