Vincent Van Gogh’s Painting Made in Arles (1888-1889)

The fast-paced city life of Paris affected Van Gogh’s already delicate psychological health. Consequently, he preferred to work alone during this time. He left Paris, and the influence of Impressionist and neo-Impressionist ideas, to return to his favorite subject matter—landscape and rural-themed painting and portraiture. He developed a new approach to landscapes and still life; his paintings during this time became more bright and colorful.

Van Gogh stayed at The Yellow House for most of his time in Arles, with his friend Gauguin. He developed a unique concept of color that symbolized inner emotion. His subject matter included olive trees, wheat fields, sunflowers, and cypresses during this period.

Vincent Van Gogh Replica Oil Painting For Sale

During his one year stay at Arles, Van Gogh created some of his best works.  He was attracted to the rural charm of the place, and to the women of Arles; he started painting winter landscapes and still lives. After winter, he painted the blossoming fruit trees during the spring, some of his favorites being “Orchard In Blossom” and “Orchard In Blossom With View Of Arles”. During his stay at The Yellow House, he befriended local residents, some of whom he painted as well.

The “Railway Carriages” painting that was done by Vincent deserves a special mention due to the use of complex, contrasting shades. Vincent Van Gogh’s use of bold, arbitrary colors give these paintings a grandeur—something that prominently can be seen in his Roulin family painting and a portrait he created of the postman which is called the “Portrait Of The Postman, Joseph Roulin”.
